Overview

Savvie is the way to empower local residents of Savannah, to gain trust in recycling, through transparency in the waste management system.

We proposed the following solution to the City of Savannah’s Recycling and Litter Services Division, to combat the low trust and perceived transparency toward the waste management system among Savannahian.

Collaborators

This project is a collaborative effort between Gabriel Mataleo, Anna Campise, Miri Navarro Ramos, and Mandy Tu.

Gabriel is the team lead for Savvie, responsible for organizing the team, managing timelines, overseeing branding, directing the art style, designing the user interface, and conducting user testing.

Results

A multifaceted
solution for
regaining trust

Resolving everyday problems, one bin at a time

Finally, we developed an app experience that helped Savannah residents keep track of their recycling and trash collection. The app also provided users with information on the impact of their recycling, which helped to reinforce the importance of responsible waste management practices.

Our solution included several components, such as a new public-facing mascot named Savvie, which helped to create a positive and engaging image for the recycling program. We also created posters that aligned with the city's efforts to promote the new recycling program for cardboard.

Focus on educating
our next generation

To further educate the public, we developed a series of educational materials, such as a website, story, and shorts for kids, which emphasized the importance of reducing waste and recycling. These materials helped to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling and encourage individuals to take action.

Research

Defining trust
and transparency
in waste management

The lack of trust and transparency in the waste management system can have a significant impact on the community, including a decrease in recycling rates and an increase in littering.

To address this issue, we used generative research methods to define trust and transparency within the scope of waste management. Our research involves engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders to understand their perspectives, experiences and needs regarding waste management.

Our Research assumptions:

  • The people of Savannah will take the required action if it can bring a positive social impact.

  • There is a large population of environmentally conscious people who lives in Savannah.

  • Savannah's recycling program is not popularly known.

  • People believe their recycling is not always being recycled.
